What we are

After watching, consider if the video makes an accurate generalization of humanity, and what that may mean to you. Share your thoughts below.

  1. When I first started watching this video, I thought it was going to be about how small and insignificant we are to the existence of the cosmos. By the time it was over, I was yelling at Steven for picking this video. I understand that we are monkeys and that in the grand scheme of things, nothing more than that, but really, someone had to make a video about it. Ugh.
Ps I hate that annoying sound between slides.

  2. Personally, I enjoyed this video a lot more than some of the past videos, because it truly did make me think. It's clear that humans truly are more advanced than monkeys, but to me, this video reminded me of what life's really all about. Actual monkeys, and all other animals, live their lives by doing what they need to do to get by, and making all decisions by following their instincts. There's no way that humans could live this simply, because we do have emotions, moral values, and critical thinking skills. However, maybe if everyone was focused on what was truly important (aka food, shelter, companionship, etc.) and if everyone let their emotions, ideas, and materialistic needs dictate their moods a little less, I'm sure that there would be less problems and bad attitudes in the world.

Clearly, this video stretches reality -- I am not literally a monkey. This video does make a valid point, though; worrying about trite, materialistic, or little things in life is a very silly way to live. Happiness comes naturally to those who live simply and enjoy life.

  3. I agree that humans do overcomplicate things. If we just focused on what is really important in life, then we would probably have less problems. Unfortunately, with our emotions, thoughts and feelings it is hard for humans to not overthink things because it is in our nature to do so. This video was very repitive with all of the monkey stuff, but it did make me think of how if we worried less like animals do than we would probably have a more simple life.

  4. I really liked this video. It was a splash of reality because most of it was true. I agree with ^ AmandaMae. Humans do overcomplicate things. We worry so much about things that shouldn't really matter like what we wear, what we look like, but especially what others think about us. We should be free creatures who live our lives without the stress of trying to be someone else to fit in. However, because of the way society works the only way to live without stress IS to fit in. I also found it funny when the narrator said something about how monkeys perform for other monkeys, it was the Monkies band picture. That was quite punny.....at leastI think it was the Monkies....In any case, this video made me re-evaluate the way I live my life. Do I live it for me or do I live it for others? I think....I want to live it for me.

  5. I really enjoyed this video. It was really interesting and thought provoking. It essentially took our complexity away, make us simple people. Every single person came from the same beginning and even though they may feel or act different, in reality we are all the same. I really enjoyed watching this YouTube video because it brought me back to reality.

  6. The most obnoxious part of this video was when the narrator claimed that us "monkeys" have the curse of a conscience. Consciences make us afraid and worried about everything the narrator claims. But in reality, the conscience is a gift. Without having a conscience we would not have worried enough about the future generations to make the world a better place. We would not have the innovations we do today. We would not have the hearts to step in as a 3rd party and end wars and thoughtless killing. If we wouldn't have consciences the world would have been blown away a long time ago! Consciences are a gift, not a curse!

A second aspect that I disagree with is the claim that we are monkeys. We are not monkeys. There is a fine line of distinction. (I know some will disagree to this, but I'll say it anyways.) Animals live on instinct. Humans were given two specific gifts that separate us and give us dominion over animals. Humans have free will and intellect. We can choose between good and evil, right and wrong. Animals are trained to do good (don't chew my slippers!) or bad (cock fights). Intellect is simple. We can think abstractly while animals cannot. We can deduce conclusions from facts, while animals are bound to trial and error.

We are not monkeys, and conscience is a gift not a curse!
thanks for posting a though provoking video.

  9. I really enjoyed this video. It was really interesting and thought provoking. I agree with Amanda, humans do overcomplicate things they also tend to make the most trivial matters important in some way. I like the message; however, classifying humans as monkeys was distracting. Homo sapiens sapiens falls under a different suborder than old world and new world monkeys. But please, don't let this discourage the intent of the video. I just had to substitute the word monkey with Ape to be technically correct, Other than the minor classification issue I thought this video to be very good. wouldn't the world be a better place without human conscience?

  10. First off thank you for posting a video that actually makes us think and is relevant! I share the same thoughts as everybody who mentioned how humans overcomplicate things. I have found myself doing this on many occasions and think that people need to stop always trying to read into things because sometimes you just have to call a spade a spade. Along with Jon, and being an anthropology minor, I found the constant classifications of people as monkeys to be distracting and I cringed every time they said it and had to substitute in the word Ape. Although it bothered me that they kept using monkey, I can say with certainty that the video would not make its point as effectively if they would have said ape because of the different connotations each word carries. Overall I really enjoyed this video and and want to say thank you for posting it!

  11. I thought this video was cool how it really puts into perspective all the things us humans do and how stupid that can sound sometimes

  13. I love this video because it is a meaningful and thoughtful. We strive to understand who we are, where we came from, where we are going and why. It is a tough thing to think about. In my opinion, whether the men were descended from monkey is not necessary for us to discuss. Only thing to do is to cherish the lives and people near us. I think we are lucky landed on the earth and became the most advanced species in the world. We can do whatever we want, even compete with the nature, but lots of disasters will retaliate sooner or later. We can kill our humans like us to satisfy our needs. I strongly agree with what AmandaMae56 comments, our happiness is not come from the overcomplicate things, but come from our real simple life.

  14. I agree with what everyone seems to be saying. We humans make things to complicated by over thinking and obsessing over things that just aren't that important. But I do also agree with Katie that while our emotions and feelings can get in the way and complicate things, our ability to have these emotions and feelings has helped us think to make life better for future generations and progress as a species. So I think that even though we may over think things and make life more complicated, our emotions also do a lot to not only benefit us but others as well. I also agree that humans are not monkeys... :p

  15. I agree with almost all of the above in their thoughts about we as humans over think and over complicate things. We take something that is in our minds something really important but in the grand scheme of things, it is really something that does not need to be as crazy as we make it. We take the most trivial things in our lives and we try to make them the most important thing and when in reality, it is really something that has just been over thought. This movie really brought all of this to light and showed us really how ridiculous we can be.

  16. APES. Its not monkeys, its completely different. Overall, it was a pretty good video which made me think about a lot of things. I also agree with Amanda, that people make things too complicated and that ends up making a lot of things worse; its a good message. Awesome video, it would have been if they had said apes instead of monkeys, which really bothered me; other than that, it was great. O hope more groups post videos like this.

  17. I love the new perspective that I have personally never thought of that was opened up in the video... and just by reading the other comments, I see that others agree. I believe that attempting taking a fresh new perspective on anything in life is important.

  18. This oversimplifies humanity incredibly. A nihilist would watch this and complain because of how little value it places on the value of humanity, personhood, relationships, and all of those things. We all fight for our livelihoods, and love, and creativity, and our ideals, so saying we're "monkeys" derogatorily is misunderstanding what it is to be alive. There are plenty of good points, but there is just as much ignorance in this video as the video insinuates we "monkeys" have.

  19. As humans we try to think that our minds are superior to everything else. In reality our minds our superior but not to the extent that we believe. This movie can easily show how monkeys and humans have equivalent instincts. Both monkeys and humans resort to the same things, such as discriminating and war. Overall, the movie is a good representation of how humans view themselves.

  20. I believe that the video was good, I felt does justice to our over complication of petty things we do in life. I think that in the grand scheme of things we need to look more at the similarities than differences and we need to stop worrying and start just being human

  21. This video made fun of human beings by sharp contrasts between we and monkeys. Compared to monkeys, we worried too much about our everyday lives. However, monkeys' lives are very simple but happay.
